Easter is a time for tradition: hot cross buns, roast lamb and chocolate eggs galore. Yet before the big day itself, many relish the Good Friday trip to the local chippy.
For generations families have been tucking into fish and chips ahead of Easter weekend, cutting into crispy battered cod and dousing chips in vinegar. In fact head to your local chippy any day of the week and there’s always someone purchasing a tasty treat.
We’ve even asked readers for their favourite chippies across Greater Manchester to compile a list of the very best, which you can find here.
Considering all chippies pretty much sell the exact same product, one area where they can be creative is with their name. And boy do some go to town.

Names involving puns, word play and just the downright bizarre; when it comes to naming a business chippies don’t hold back. Some are rather clever and others are simple yet effective.
But they never fail to put a smile on your face when you see them and an eyectaching name helps them to stand out in a sea of takeaways. Here’s some of the funniest, clever and random chippy names you’ll find in Greater Manchester.
One spot with excellent word play is Reel Fish and Chips on Deane Road in Bolton. Now we do hope that every chippy is serving up authentic fish and chips, but it’s good to know that this establishment offers customers the real deal. Or should that be the reel deal? Either way it never fails to reel customers in. Moving swiftly on.

Carrying on the theme with more fishing-themed names is Off The Hook Fish and Chips on Northernden Road, Sale; and The Good Catch, Brook Road Urmston. Both are clever without being cheesy.
Everyone loves a pun, and chippies clearly do. Over in Wigan you’ll find Northern Sole Chippy on Gidlow Lane which ticks all the pun boxes. The charming logo even features a dancing fish and chip but dancing after eating your chippy tea is not advised.
Perhaps one of the most popular chippy puns is incorporating ‘plaice’ in the name. For a prime example of that head over the border in Lancashire to Edenfield, home to My Plaice, previously called Bizzy Plaice.
But since cod is the star of the show when it comes to fish and chips, it’s only right that it should get the starring role in a chippy name. OH MY COD, in Holts Village, Oldham does just that.

In Stockport’s Underbanks lies Salty Towers Fish Bar, although thankfully there’s no resemblance with the dysfunctional hotel from the BBC comedy starring John Cleese.
Some chippy names don’t take themselves too seriously. Venture over to Littleborough and you’ll come across Chippy Licious, which is (hopefully) delicious. Or pay a visit to Mr Chips on Bolton Road, Swinton.
But you might just find the surrealist chippy name in Poynton: The Strawberry Pig on Park Lane which has been serving up fish and chips for decades and is certainly a name customers won't forget.
